Director's Note

I submitted West Side Story for production at HLT for multiple reasons. First, as a Shakespeare fanatic, I loved the modern updating of Romeo and Juliet, the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers. It's also one of the few "classic" musicals whose music I find compelling and relevant today. I also think its theme of love and gang warfare is as important today as it was when the show debuted on Broadway nearly half a century ago. The social issues of racism and teen violence continue to plague our society, and the show's message of love and tolerance is still an important one.

Some people said this show couldn't be done at HLT because I'd never get enough young performers who could a.) sing the difficult music, b.) dance the choreography, c.) act the drama, and d.) all of the above. I became determined to prove the naysayers wrong, and I know you will agree with me after you have seen the show that this cast has proved Highlands County is blessed with young people who have all the talent and enthusiasm needed to put on such a complex, emotional show. I am especially pleased that, for many in our cast, this is their first experience on the stage and at HLT. I have come to care deeply about these young adults and would gladly work with any of them at any time.

There are many people responsible for the overall excellence of WSS. First and foremost are Jennifer Westergom and Joe Willis; they deserve far more credit and glory than I can possibly give them for the choreography and music direction. MY wonderful husband Pete slaved to make the show's sound and lighting a feast for the eyes and ears. Mark and Holly Elliott obsessed over the sets to create the perfect mood for this show, and Steve Van Dam and his students have created another masterpiece and the New York backdrop. I also have to thank Steve McDaniel as my producer and stage manager for keeping me sane and on track.

Finally, I'd like to thank Goldie Garnich and the HLT Board of Directors for their support in upgrading the equipment at HLT in time for WSS to provide the most professional theatrical experience we can for our patrons. This upgrade will enhance all our shows from now on; WSS is simply the first to benefit from the Board's vision.

Relax and enjoy West Side Story's emotional roller coaster. If you feel the need to laugh and cry, go ahead. I still do.
